About Boating in Boston
Everyone at Boating in Boston shares a passion for boating, exploring New England, and enjoying the outdoors. Since we love adventures on the water, we’re excited to share the fun with as many people as possible.
You might say that’s our mission.
We’re dedicated to working with towns across New England to provide residents with boating opportunities, as well as offering camps for kids who need to get outside and experience boating!
We began this mission in 2002 in Hopkinton, MA. Originally named Outdoor Recreation of Hopkinton, a charismatic man named Barry started the boating vision by opening a kayak rental concession in Hopkinton. Over time, the business grew as residents discovered a place that offered access to boating and fun water activities. This expansion included sailing, summer camps, and boating season passes, creating a community of water lovers.
Before long, Barry’s boat rentals became a thriving business.
In 2009, Barry sold his business to a group of friends, all of whom had met within the boating community and shared a tremendous passion for the water. They continued to open boathouses throughout the greater Boston area, providing residents with access to water activities in their hometowns, and rebranded the company as Boating In Boston.
After four years of continued success, the group set sail in search of new opportunities. In 2013, friends in Washington, DC reached out, and they eagerly took on the challenge. Key Bridge Boathouse soon opened, keeping the spirit of John “Jack” Baxter alive by continuing his vision of public boat access on the Potomac River.
In 2016, Boating in Boston was acquired by Guest Services, Inc. (GSI), who welcomed us into their recreation family with open arms.
Currently, we operate two boathouses in the greater Boston area, nine locations in Washington, DC, and eleven boathouses within Florida State Parks.
It has been an incredible experience so far, and it’s rewarding for all of us to watch our team grow while continuing to provide outdoor activities to towns across New England and beyond!
